Vacation Water Damage

When preparing and packing for a vacation or getaway, you are always thinking ahead to what you are going to be doing while gone. But as you are planning your trip, take the time leading up to leaving to check around your home and make any preventative measures against any water issues that may arise while you are gone.

Inspect Water Sources – Appliances, Pipes and Windows

Large Appliances- The hoses that bring water in and out can often develop weak sections, tears, or even hose kinks. Any of these issues can cause the hose to malfunction, causing water leaks to happen. It is also a good idea to periodically pull your appliances out from the wall, and check under them to ensure there are no issues happening from small leaks.

Windows- Check the seals around the window for discoloration. If there is some signs of breaking down, take the time to reseal those areas.

Pipes- Check all exposed pipes for any sign of weakness, including rusting or small cracking.

Guard Against the Elements

If taking a trip during cooler months, instead of turning the heat off, simply turn the temperature down a little lower. Turning it completely off can cause water pipes or lines to freeze and bust. Also, check outside or any pipes that are exposed to the elements, and make sure to insulate them.  This also includes any that may be in your garage and exposed to more of the elements.

Enlist Backup

Have someone you trust come and walk through your home a few times while you are gone. This ensures that if anything happens, you are finding it early, and not when you are arriving home.
