  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold will keep returning.
  • Bleaches and other cleaners that advertise to kill or clean off mold only remove mold from the surface temporarily and do not kill the spores which is why the mold will keep growing back.
  • Mold often produces a strong and must odor.

Three Ways To Prevent a Dryer Fire

Practice keeping a tidy lint trap on your dryer.

Three Ways To Prevent a Dryer Fire

Clothing dryers are a standard appliance found in the average household. But as commonplace as this appliance may be, failure to properly install or operate a home dryer can lead to the start of a lint fire. Prevent a dryer fire from starting in your own home by following these 3 basic steps:

1. Professional Dyer Installation

From the time of purchase, you should opt to have your dryer professionally installed. Trained specialists who install home appliances should have the correct tools and knowledge to install your dryer. Whether your dyer requires special ventilation hoses or an adapter for the electrical outlet, your appliance installation technician can help you to get things set up safely the first time around.

2. Follow Manufacturer Instructions and Clothing Labels

Once your dryer is properly installed and ready for operation, be sure you follow the guidelines found in your user manual. See what materials and fabric softeners can be safely used in conjunction with your particular model. Likewise, follow drying directions found on clothing labels before throwing them in after washing. Look for clothing label instruction warnings such as:

  • Do not tumble dry
  • Line dry only
  • Flammable materials such as rubber, plastic, or foam
  1. Perform Routine Cleaning and Maintenance

When it comes to maintaining a safe dryer, always start by cleaning the lint trap frequently. Empty the lint trap between each drying cycle. Never operate your dryer without a properly installed lint catcher. Without it, debris can become backed up and increase your risk of starting a lint fire. Other regular maintenance practices to consider include:
  • Vent pipe cleaning every 3 months with a dryer exhaust snake
  • Annual inspection of gas operated dryers to avoid gas leaks
  • Regular inspection of outside dryer vent to ensure dirt, debris or wildlife is not blocking it

A dryer left uncared for could be a recipe for disaster. A lint fire may require special help from a reputable fire restoration company like SERVPRO of Farmington. Use these 3 handy tips to prevent a dryer fire from starting in your home.

Fortunately, there is no need to panic because mold remediation specialists are available to help with emergency situations. Here are answers to frequently asked questions about mold growth.

1. Are There Various Types of Mold?
People are familiar with black mold due to its noticeable color; however, there are many types of mold that can be found in a home. The most common molds are Stachybotrys, Mucormycetes and Aspergillus, though there are literally thousands of different mold strains. Homeowners often spot mold because of color or odor. Stachybotrys is commonly known as black mold, Mucormycetes is a fuzzy mold seen on food and air conditioner drip pans and Aspergillus can be found on any damp area in a home.

2. How Can Mold Be Prevented?
Mold is found indoors and outdoors and is a natural part of the environment. Mold only becomes a problem when moisture is present. Knowing that there are thousands of mold strains may cause homeowners to worry; nevertheless, there are simple ways to prevent mold growth. First, reduce the humidity in your home to less than 45 percent. Homes with high humidity are susceptible to moisture. Second, fix water leaks immediately and dry wet areas thoroughly within 24 hours of leaking. Prevent condensation around windows and pipes, and don’t install carpet in high-moisture areas.

3. Do All Molds Need to Be Remediated?
Regardless of the type of mold that is present in your home, it’s important to have the problem remediated. Water damage needs to be taken care of professionally to prevent mold problems.
There are many types of molds found in homes and all types need to be remediated. Fortunately, homeowners can be proactive in preventing mold growth from becoming a problem.

When do you need a duct cleaning?

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

We are highly trained in duct cleaning. You can expect a 5 star experience.

Having periodical air duct cleaning service done is important. Read on to find out when you should engage professional air duct cleaning services!

When Do You Need Professional Air Duct Cleaning Services

Everybody wants a clean house. But what if your house is not as clean as you thought? Even though your floors and surfaces may be dust-free, it does not mean areas that you cannot see, and reach are clean. Unfortunately, your air duct contains a lot of dirt, dust, and allergens as they work frequently to provide cooled or heated air around your home. As air conditioning systems draw in air from the outside world to cool the house, it is easy for contaminants to enter your home.

Cleaning air ducts is a complicated process that requires specific knowledge. As such, you should always engage professionals for cleaning services to help you do a thorough job. If you are unsure of whether your air duct requires cleaning, read on to find out some signs of a dirty air duct.

Presence of Mold in Your Air Conditioning System

Your air conditioning system should undergo maintenance and clean periodically. Professionals recommend your system to be serviced at least twice a year. Due to the condensation that results from cooling air, mold growth is a possibility, especially if the climate you live in is a humid one. If your technician informs you that your air conditioning system has mold, you should ask to see the evidence. Once confirmed, you can contact a mold expert. Air conditioning technicians may not have the credentials to get rid of mold, so you should ensure you get a certified professional to do so.

Even if mold is found, it does not necessarily mean your air ducts are affected. However, it makes it highly possible. It is important to engage professionals to check to make sure.

Your Home is Newly Renovated

Construction sites are very messy. Even if contractors clean up and barricade off areas to keep the rest of the house not undergoing construction tidy, little pieces of debris and dust will find their way in. Unless your air conditioning system is not turned on and kept completely covered up throughout the construction work, it is possible for the dust and dirt to find their way to your air ducts. Furthermore, construction dust contains matter that can be harmful when you breathe it in. You should call professionals to clean your air ducts before any other major problems arise.

Your Home is Dusty Despite Cleaning

Cleaning up dust is not the most exciting activity but is something we have to do often. However, if you notice that surfaces and areas of your house seem to always have a layer of dust even if you just cleaned the area, you probably need to clean your air ducts. You can look at the supply and return vents in your home. Do they look dirty? Go one step further to check by removing the vent cover and looking into the ductwork. If they are covered in dust, it is time to schedule a professional air duct cleaning service.

Increasing Cost for Heating or Cooling Air

Every year, the costs incurred from switching on the air conditioning and heater should be relatively similar and predictable. However, if you notice your bill increasing even though you find your usage to be about the same, you may have a problem. In some cases, the air duct is so dirty that air cannot flow through the system efficiently and freely. As such, the air conditioner needs to work harder to maintain the temperature of the room, thus consuming more electricity and resulting in higher utility bills.

If you are looking for professionals to help clean your air ducts, look no further than SERVPRO of Farmington. Our team of professionals will be able to help you with keeping your air ducts clean. Feel free to contact us for more information about our services today!

4 Things That Mold Spores Hate

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

Mold remediation in Bonne Terre, MO

If your building has seen some recent water damage, it's a good idea to be on the lookout for blotches of mold growing on walls and ceilings. If you do discover areas of this ugly fungi, there is no need to panic. Though mold can be a tricky adversary, it does have its weaknesses. Here are four actions that stop mold in its tracks and return your commercial building in our servicing areas back to pristine condition.

Quick Action. A professional mold remediation franchise can dispatch certified technicians to your place of business in just a few hours. An experienced company will have all of the tools to deal with just about any situation. Mold growth moves fast, so technicians need to take quick action to contain the problem. A delayed response can lead to the formation of additional mold colonies.

Mold Containment. One key to mold prevention is reducing the possibility of the spores spreading throughout the building. If left untreated, the fungus will colonize new areas that are suitable, such as moist areas of the building. The mold spores can also spread through the HVAC system, so it is best to turn off or limit the use of heating and cooling for a time. Physical barriers and isolation techniques will be employed along with negative air pressure equipment to reduce the spread.

Water Removal. Effective mold prevention hinges on the reduction of moisture in a building. Any areas of water damage should be dried and ventilated. All rooms should be taken below 45% humidity. Above this level, mold growth is likely to return even after a thorough cleaning

Cleaning and Sanitizing. Effective cleaning agents can kill mold and prevent its return. All affected surfaces should be cleaned, as well as any contents that have been infested.
Mold is not all-powerful. With the treatment of water damage and science-based techniques for mold removal, your mold problem will soon be in the past.

How to Prevent Mold from Growing in Your Bathroom

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

Mold on bathroom ceiling.

While it is true that mold growth can be found just about anywhere, particularly after any sort of water damage, your bathroom is especially prone to mold spores. If you're concerned about mold infiltrating your home, these three preventative measures can help.

  1. Make Use of Your Bathroom Fan

Bathrooms are humid by default. Unwanted water, both in the air and on porous surfaces, can be detrimental to the state of your home. For example, broken or cracked bathroom tiles, either in the shower or part of the flooring, can lead to mold growth if neglected. An excellent way to prevent this haven for mold spores is by ensuring your bathroom stays dry.
Keep the fan running while you bathe and for at least 30 minutes after. This will help rid the bathroom of abundant moisture, which is prone to lingering in confined areas and causing water damage. Left unattended, this excess moisture can even lead to black mold, which will require remediation experts to rectify.

  1. Remove Excess Water After Showers and Baths

This step is relatively self-explanatory but extremely important. In fact, removing the moisture clinging to your tiles can rid your bathroom of up to 75% of surplus condensation. Utilizing a squeegee is one of the simplest ways to eliminate remaining water from your shower walls.

  1. Annually Reseal Your Shower to Ensure Your Tiles Are in Good Repair

Standard grout sealer is your best friend when it comes to mold prevention. This mixture of sand, cement, and lime is used as a filler between tiles after setting. Adding a grout sealer prevents your bathroom tiles from absorbing stains, bacteria, and excess water, decreasing your chances of a mold infestation.

Undoubtedly, the best way to avoid water damage and the potential for mold growth is by preventing it. Utilizing your bathroom fan, keeping tiles free of lingering moisture, and resealing those tiles as needed can all contribute to the current, mold-free state of your home.

Here is a prime example of mold that you wouldn't typically see unless baseboard is removed.

Did you know that there are multiple, hundreds of thousands of mold spores floating around outdoors? Knowing the dangers of mold, it is quite frightening thinking about it, but what is more of a concern would be finding mold inside your own home. Mold is known to belong to the kingdom of fungi. It can appear to be plant like but cannot create its own food. It absorbs its nutrients from other organic substances. Mold can simply generate with water and something living – or even once living, like wood. Invitations of mold to your own home would consist of poor ventilation, moisture and water damages in which were not addressed immediately. In any areas of your home that moisture issues happen to occur, you want to be sure that you have a source of ventilation within that area. The consistent moisture and humidity will eventually cause mold. This is another reason to report any serious water damages right away. You may be able to clean the visible mess but sometimes the affected areas cannot be seen. SERVPRO of Farmington is here for you, anytime. If you have any questions or concerns due to recent water loss or any visible mold, do not hesitate to call us 573-756-5191. Our team will always be there, ready to help.

1/6/2020 (Permalink)

We take great pride in the IICRC at SERVPRO of Farmington.

IICRC Certification

Restoration industry standards are set by the Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification Board. It is a non-profit group overseeing the qualification of the restoration, remediation and cleaning trade. When a technician obtains a program mitigation certificate from the IICRC, he or she is held to the highest standards. Not only does this keep industry standards high, but it also establishes a recognized national standard, and that is why insurance agents and adjusters keep the graduates on their preferred vendor's lists. Here are a few of the values the technicians are expected to uphold.

1. Respect

Technicians are taught that working with clients and staff that everyone treats respectfully can elevate the job site. It can also help bring out natural abilities and let inborn qualities shine.

2. Integrity

Valuing integrity, the expectation is that all graduating technicians will have strong ethical principles. Dealing honestly and upholding high values is important in developing an honorable reputation within the cleaning and restoration industry.

3. Responsibility

Once at a job, all IICRC technicians are expected to work as if the property were their own. This includes completing the job promptly and using the best tools available to finish the job.

4. Excellence

Service, leadership, and duty are all part of what the graduate is expected to bring to the office each day. Technicians are also taught to hold high standards in service, on the job and off.

5. Expertise

To keep standards, values, and expertise high, the board continues to hold classes to improve industry knowledge. As new and improved tools become available, they are incorporated into the classes. Also, certification is a lifelong process of self-improvement and gaining professional knowledge. Technicians must obtain 14 hours of education every four years.

The IICRC helps hold trained technicians of the cleaning and restoration industry to a high standard and we take great pride of that here at SERVPRO of Farmington.

Getting Rid of Unpleasant Odors in Your Home

4/24/2019 (Permalink)

Odors from smoke, pets, decomposition or mold can cause lingering odors in your home or business. A simple surface clean doesn’t necessarily get rid of these smells. With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO of Farmington provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by smoke, mold or other sources. Our professionals do not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; they seek out and remove the sources of the odor. Once the source is found, we use SERVPRO’s own proprietary line of cleaning products to treat and prevent the odor from returning. Any restorable item in affected areas will also be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts, and more. Along with our proprietary line of cleaning products SERVPRO of Farmington uses various techniques and equipment to treat odors. These techniques are capable of penetrating surfaces to neutralize an unpleasant odor thoroughly. Some of the tools we use include: Ozone Generator: The Ozone Generator is one of the quickest ways to eliminate odors from a home or office. We use the Ozone Generator to oxidize odor and eliminate odors from mold, mildew, pets, nicotine, smoke and more without the use of chemicals. Though the room being treated cannot be occupied while in use, the generator works quickly to clean, sanitize and remove offensive odors. Hydroxyl Generator: The Hydroxyl Generator has several benefits that the Ozone Generator does not. The main benefit is that the room being treated can be occupied during the deodorization process; though it does work slower. The Hydroxyl Generator can be used to treat fire and smoke, as well as biohazard jobs, water damage, crime scene situations, and animal odors. Air Filtration Device: This piece of equipment, also known as an air scrubber, is used to remove airborne contaminants during water, fire, smoke, mold, and sewage restoration work. These work by pulling air through HEPA filtration to remove airborne particles from the air. This helps clean the air and remove odors. Whether you are a building manager who needs an apartment cleaned for the next tenant or homeowner who wants to get your home ready for sale, getting rid of offensive odors is a high priority. Fire, water, or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, SERVPRO of Farmington is here to help make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (573) 756-5191

A fire to your residential or commercial property can cause a serious detriment and stress to your family. But, our highly qualified and trained fire damage specialists at SERVPRO of Farmington can relieve some of that stress by restoring your home or business to make it “Like it never even happened.” ®

Every fire damage situation is a little different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. When various materials burn, the soot they create differs greatly and requires a specific cleaning procedure. The 7 steps listed below illustrate the SERVPRO of Farmington's’ process for the “typical” fire damage restoration.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

After the fire trucks leave, your home or business likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO of Farmington has the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire condition.

If you’re ever faced with fire damage at your home or business and wonder why SERVPRO of Farmington, it’s because we are your local fire damage specialists. And we are there with you throughout your entire journey. If you ever have any questions, contact us online anytime. Or, simply give us a call (573) 756-5191.
